Massive Snowstorm Cripples Romania
The Department for Emergency Situations reported that the storm battered 67 localities across 21 counties, including Bucharest, though no casualties have been recorded.
The National Meteorological Administration issued red alerts for Ilfov County and Bucharest, warning that snow accumulation could surpass 50 centimeters in the capital — a threshold that would mark one of the most severe winter events in recent memory.
Aviation took an immediate hit at Henri Coanda International Airport, where eight flights were cancelled and five others diverted as plummeting visibility and heavy snowfall forced the temporary closure of two runways.
On the ground, several motorways near Bucharest were placed under traffic restrictions. Maritime operations came to a standstill in Constanta and Tulcea counties, while lorry transit at the Ruse-Giurgiu border crossing linking Romania to Bulgaria was suspended entirely.
The storm left roughly 18,400 consumers without power across 21 localities in five counties, as widespread outages compounded the disruption.
Authorities issued urgent warnings urging residents to refrain from non-essential travel, cautioning that continued heavy snowfall and gusting winds could deepen the crisis in the hours ahead.
